This Sunday is great time for kids to have a blast on skis!

The 11th Annual ConocoPhillips Winter Carnival is a fun hour-and-a-half filled with ski games and a scavenger hunt.  This free event, hosted by the NSCF-FXC Comp and Prep Teams, starts at 2 p.m. and lasts until 3:30 p.m. at Birch Hill Recreation Area. It is held in conjunction with the regular Sunday Junior Nordics session, but you don’t have to be a member of Junior Nordics to join in on the fun. Skiers who come to Junior Nordics on another day of the week are welcome to join on Sunday as well.  In addition, Interior skiers age 4 to 13 that are not currently signed-up for Junior Nordics are welcome to join as well. (Parents of skiers not signed up for Junior Nordics should arrive at 1:45 p.m. to fill out a waiver for the event in the Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center, and to find where to send their skiers for the start of the event).

(Note: This event, now scheduled for February 19, had to be rescheduled from February 12 because of cold temperatures.)

Games vary with age groups. Activities planned for younger kids include obstacles courses, tag on skis, short track relay, and peas on a plate relay (using Frisbees and tennis balls). Activities planned for older kids include dual slalom, ski jumping, ski hockey, and terrain garden obstacle course. The event concludes with a scavenger hunt.

Stay tuned to www.nscfairbanks.org and the NSCF Facebook page for event updates. (The event will be postponed if the temperature will be colder than -5F at Birch Hill).

The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks would like to thank ConocoPhillips for helping make this event possible. The NSCF would also like to thank the NSCF-FXC Comp and Prep Teams for sharing their passion for the sport with Fairbanks’ youth skiers.
