Junior Nordics

NSCF Junior Nordics provides an opportunity for children to enjoy the Fairbanks winter while learning the sport of cross country skiing. Children ages 4 to 14 of all abilities are welcome to join and learn a sport they can pursue for a lifetime. The emphasis is on fun, fitness, and learning proper technique.

NSCF Junior Nordics skiers receive instruction in both classical and skate techniques from enthusiastic and dedicated coaches. Skiers learn proper care and handling of equipment, trail etiquette, good sportsmanship and how to act responsibly in the outdoors. A typical practice session will include a warm-up period, a lesson in a technique and appropriate length group ski on the trails, ending with a fun activity.

Sunday, February 15 (postponed from February 8) will mark the 9th edition of the ConocoPhillips Winter Carnival, a fun hour-and-a-half filled with ski games and a scavenger hunt.

The NSCF Candy Cane race will be held this Sunday, December 14, at 1pm. This event is free and open to all Junior Nordic skiers and the whole Fairbanks ski community. There will be an obstacle course with candy canes that skiers can pick up. Santa will come for a visit and the children will have hot chocolate afterwards. The Trax Outdoor Center has generously donated tokens for free ice cream to all participants. The store is located at 314 Birch Hill Rd.

This event is in addition to the normal Junior Nordic lesson time from 2 to 3pm. This will be the last Sunday Junior Nordic session before the Christmas break. Lessons resume January 11-March 5. (Tuesday and Thursday JN skiers will have Dec. 16 and 18 lessons.)

Families interested in joining Junior Nordics after Christmas should contact Sally Endestad (371-9564; This email address is being protected from spambots.
