Touring is on for the 2009-20010 season. We have overwhelming responses from ski leaders and lovers to conduct the tours. New this year are Moonlight ski (hope for a clear sky on a full moon night) and overnight to a cabin ski. Meet: 11am along Chena Point Ave.(off Chena Pump Rd., about 1.5 miles pass Roland road) by the gravel pit.

Chena Flat is a wet land area which is preserved for recreational us for skiers,dog musher’s and snow machine trail. The trail is about 5 miles and 1.5 hour ski, flat terrain. Gather at Aporn’s home, 1325 West Chena Hills Dr, after the tour for hot drink and food.

UAF trail system is known for having smaller hills. This tour takes a route that maximizes the ups and downs to give a good workout. It also travels some of the lesser know classic trails. Treats at Stan’s house after the tour.

 Beginner level, 2-3 hours, rolling terrain on Rabbit Run ridge, great views of Alaska Range (and Ft. Knox mine and NASA/NOAA Tracking at Gilmore). We stop for a snack enroute. Carpool to start on old Ft. Knox access road. Return to Jan Lokken’s for cocoa and chili.

Meet: Skiland Road pullout just off the Steese Highway at 9:45 am.

 Intermediate level, 3-4 hours.  Car shuttle to Chatanika Lodge then  to start at True North pit.  Start can be windblown and rocky, then exhilarating descent (can walk if necessary) through woods on old mining lane past Davidson Ditch to present mines whose roads have overflow. Can be extremely cold and beautiful down here.  Out Tanana Valley RR grade past historic house ruins and old Chatanika townsite to the dredge & Lodge at Chatanika.

Car pool to start at end of plowed Fairbanks Creek Road.  Ski out Fairbanks Creek Rd., then turn off to descend steeply to Bear Creek where it can be really cold.  Skins may be necessary to climb back up old mining access road and out to Fairbanks Cr.     Tour leader will pick the group up in a van and bring us to the trail head.  We can then ski back to our cars and warm up in the lodge with a snack

Cleary Summit to Chatanika lodge for a Burger.  2-3 hours. Intermediate level skiing with one big descent.  Light metal edge skis would be nice.  The tour will follow trails north along a ridge back and drop down towards the Chatanika valley.  The last mile is a maze of tailings piles to ski through towards the Steese.  Most of the ski is on good snow machine trails, but there is a little rough stuff.

Meet: Meet: Birch Hill Ski Recreation Area on January 10th at 11:00 AM at the old warm up hut. 

Bring Classic Skis and we will be skiing the surprising delightful Classic Bear and North Star classic trails for a total distance of approximately 10 km.  The trails sweep in an out of different forest types.  Bring snacks for afterwards as we warm back at the old ski hut.  Moderate skiing, trails can be narrow and some portions steep.

Meet: 11 am at the shooting range 36.5 mile Chena Hot Spring Rd.

(After checking the new trail, we will do reverse instead to take advantage of a long gliding down to the shooting range. We will meet at the Colorado Creek trail head at 11am)

A 5 hours ski, the total distance is16 miles. The trail climbs to the top of the ridge above the shooting range and follows a series of ridges and saddles before dropping down and out at the Colorado creek trailhead. The ridge tops provide spectacular views of Chena Dome. Car shuttle is needed between the Colorado Creek trail head and the shooting range

Meet: Noon at Ester Post Office

One of two possibilities on Ester Dome depending on snow conditions.

Option one is skiing thru the Ester Creek Mine up a long switchback road to the top of Ester Dome.  The descent will be on a parallel trail thru the aspens.  Deeper snow is required to make this trip fun. 4-5 hours.

Option two is ascend from the PO on trails to about mid level on the Dome, and descend via the Ester Back Door Trail.  -This is the shorter time/distance option.

Intermediate level.

Afterwards we’ll get together at Barb’s house for hot food and drinks.

Meet: Boat Launch Park at base of Chena Ridge Rd. at 11 am.

Stride or skate up one of the Tanana River slough to a warm tent to enjoy steaming famous stew courtesy of Ev Wenrick. This is a 5 hour ski total. It’s worth the workout for great stew! Ski route will be well marked this year.

This will be our last tour for the season.
