The KINROSS Fort Knox Town Race Series is comprised of four events open to all ages of skiers. Each event features races at increasing distances for several different age/gender groups: Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, Grades 7-8, High School/Adult Women, and High School/Adult Men. Elementary, junior high, and high school competitors must enter through their school programs or coaches. There is no entry fee for student competitors. Adult entry fee is $10 for NSCF members, due by Wednesday at 5:00 pm preceding the race. No late entries.

Dates for the 2016-2017 KINROSS Fort Knox Town Races are as follows:

  • TRS #1 NOVEMBER 19, 2016 (classic technique mass start) presented by Fairbanks Youth Sports
  • TRS #2 DECEMBER 3. 2016 (classic technique sprint) presented by Fairbanks Youth Sports
  • TRS #3 JANUARY 14, 2017 (free technique interval start) presented by Woolly Rhino
  • TRS #4 JANUARY 28, 2017 (free technique ski cross) presented by Kendall Subaru of Fairbanks

Start times for mass start races:

  • K-1-2: Girls 11:00, Boys 11:05
  • Grade 3-4: Girls 11:15, Boys 11:20
  • Grade 5-6: Girls 11:30, Boys 11:35

First skiers out in interval start events:

  • Grade 7-8 Girls:11:47:30
  • Grade 7-8 Boys: 11:58:30
  • High School and Adult Women 12:20:30
  • High School and Adult Men 12:35:30

150 skiers have entered the race.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful. It should be a great day of racing.

The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks is pleased to announce that the Nineteenth Annual KINROSS Fort KnoxTown Race Series continues with the Woolly Rhino Classic, Saturday, January 10, at 11:00am at the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails at Birch Hill Recreation Area.  The KINROSS Fort KnoxTown Race Series provides a competitive forum for skiers of all ages beginning with pre-schoolers.  Over 200 entries are anticipated.

Elementary races will be held in mass start format in classic technique.  The action starts at 11:00am with competition in the Kindergarten-1st grade-2nd grade classes (1.5km), followed by 3rd and 4th grade classes (2km), and 5th and 6th grade classes (2.5km).  Middle school, high school and adult races will be in interval start format in classic technique.  Middle school skiers will go 3Km, Women will go 5Km and high school and adult men will go 10Km. 

Entry is free for all school students from Kindergarten through high school. School students should be entered through their school club or team.  All school-aged skiers must be entered in each race in the series separately during the week leading up to the race.  The entry fee for adults is $10 for members of the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, and $15 for non-members.  Race entries close at 4:00pm Wednesday, January 7.  There will be no late entries or race day entries.  

Competitors may pick up and drop off entry forms at Beaver Sports, Raven Cross Country and Trax Outdoor Center.  Forms may be picked up at the Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center or Goldstream Sports as well. 

All elementary finishers receive a ribbon recognizing their achievement.  Elementary and junior high school-aged competitors who finish three or more of the races in the series will receive a free, commemorative t-shirt at the conclusion of the series.

KINROSS Fort Knox is in their first season as the series sponsor. Woolly Rhino, a seven-year sponsor, is the presenting sponsor for this event.  Sixteen-year partner Kendall Subaru of Fairbanks and eighteen-year partner Fairbanks Youth Sports sponsor other events in the series.  The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks also receives support from Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

The remaining race is: Saturday, January 24, 2015 - Kendall Subaru of Fairbanks Ski-Cross. Distances: 200-400m for Grades K-1-2, 300-500m for Grades 3-4, 300-500m for Grade 5-6, 400-600m for Grade 7-8; 800m-1000m for high school and adult classes; all races held in free technique

You will note that the schedule is pretty tightly packed - the races go off very close together.  Don't miss your start.

The normal start order of the age classes is reversed, with the high school and adult skiers going first, then the middle school skiers, then the elementary school skiers from oldest to youngest.

The first event in the 19th Annual KINROSS Fort Knox Town Race Series took place under sunny skies in single-digit temperatures on a hard-packed inch of six-week-old snow Saturday, November 22, at Birch Hill.  Two hundred thirty-three skiers finished the Fairbanks Youth Sports Season Opener, a mass-start, free technique event.
