The Wednesday Night Ski Race Series is back for another year.  The first race of the 2014/15 season is this Wednesday at the Birch Hill Recreation Area. The technique for this opening race is freestyle and the race will be a 2-lap relaxed course.

There will be eight Wednesday night races this season.  The first three races scheduled are for October 22, October 29 (Halloween Race), and November 5. All races start at 6:45 p.m. The average length is five kilometers and each race will be a mass start.  Only one registration is required for the entire series.  Registration begins at 6:05 p.m. in the old Warming Hut and closes ten minutes before the start of the race.

Race fees are $3 per race or $20 for the whole series.  Prizes are awarded after each race and last year more than $600 in wax, ski equipment, and gift cards were given to race participants from race sponsors. The temperature cutoff for all races will be -4 degrees, as determined by the Birch Hill web thermometer at 5:00 p.m. on race  day.  A race-status email is sent to each participant before the race.  There will be divisions for males and females with three age classes each: youth (12-18), adult (19-49), and masters (50+).  There will be a team race and a relay race this year also.

Sponsors this year are Raven Cross Country, Trax Outdoor Center, Goldstream Sports, Beaver Sports, Everts Air Alaska, and the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks.
